 Country
Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again." Can't drive without it.
Selected songs from George Strait, Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson.
Contemporary country: Little Big Town, Big & Rich. Classic Rock (and then some ... )
The Doors' "Waiting for the Sun" ... Led Zeppelin ... Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" ... So, I'm old—so what!
Live recordings of my favorite rock bands. The first one starts before I'm out on the drive: The Who's "Live at Leeds." There's nothing better.
My favorites include Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" and Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run."
The Allman Brothers' "Eat A Peach," The Eagles' "Greatest Hits 1971 – 1975."
When the day is bright with good times just a cruise down the highway, I trust no one more than Paul McCartney to fulfill the expectations.
 Oldies
In my brother's 1950s and 1960s airplane-sized, top-down convertibles—in which he cruises on New York streets—it's 50s rock-and-roll hits all over again.
I load up my 6-CD player and reminisce with the greatest Frank Sinatra albums on my Bose radio. What could be better?
 Soundtracks
The original Broadway cast album of Wicked.
Any Broadway, oldies, Gershwin, Porter, Kern.
The Star Wars soundtrack. Nothing is better while driving down a smooth road than the Imperial March.
 Jazz
In the evening, it's time to mellow out so I especially enjoy Miles Davis' classic "Kind of Blue" or "Ballads" by John Coltrane.
"The Best of David Sanborn;" "The Ozell Tapes" by Marcus Miller
 Pop Rock
We drove from Naples, Florida to Atlanta (10 hours) and only listened to John Mayer CDs the entire way.
"Ventura Highway" by America. It's adventurous and takes me back to my younger days ...
 Classical
My favorite travel music—sadly not shared by my spouse—is Beethoven, Brahms and other classical composers.
Anything by Bach.
 A Little of Everything ...
John Denver in concert or Gordon Lightfoot. Or Joni Mitchell if I'm in the mood for her.
Puccini's operas—sung in English or played by an orchestra.
Pink Martini – Their music is light and cheerful, like being at the Copacabana Club in the 1940s.
 Personalized Mixes
I tend to like instrumental music that is fast and complex, to keep me from zoning out. Joe Satriani's "Surfing with the Alien," Bela Fleck and the Flecktones' "The Hidden Land."
Santana's "Third Album," Al Dimeola's "Elegant Gypsy," Diana Krall's "The Look of Love." "Endless Summer" by The Beach Boys.
Songs or music that have a city or travel theme ... Whether it's "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" or "Magic Bus" or "Good Morning Baltimore." |
