Music in the Air
The migration is afoot. We're moving out.

Outdoors, that is. Comfortable backyard escapes with elegant furniture, landscaping, lighting—adding music could be the perfect finishing touch. Is this the year you stop balancing that old boom box on your deck railing?

Quality sound for your quality time

Consider how you spend time outdoors gardening, playing or just relaxing. Now, think about gardening to music, or adding a rich soundtrack to your outdoor entertaining.

Outdoor speakers can elevate the sound quality and broaden the scope of your open-air listening. Just as you've brought indoor comforts to your outdoor space, you can do the same with your favorite music. Why keep it behind closed doors?

Playing for the long term

True outdoor speakers (also known as environmental speakers) are engineered to play and stay outside. They're made of durable, weatherproof materials: polypropylene housings, corrosion-proof connectors, rustproof hardware and brackets. Thinking of moving indoor speakers outside? Bad idea. Dampness, temperature extremes and—if you live by the ocean—salt fog will soon silence them, even under cover.

Now consider where you spend your outdoor time. Relaxing on your deck or patio? Lounging by the pool? Communing with nature in the garden? Maybe all of the above. You'll find outdoor speakers for every scenario. Once installed, they become a permanent part of the landscape—sometimes literally.

Most deck or patio speakers come with brackets for mounting on walls, posts or under eaves. If you'd rather not attach speakers to the house, or if you want to broaden your listening area even more, so-called landscape speakers provide an interesting option.

They're designed to sit directly on or in the ground, and use the earth itself to help deliver deep, resonant lows. They fit practically anywhere and blend into their surroundings. Use them as primary speakers or in combination with porch or deck speakers to extend your outdoor listening to the patio, pool area, garden or points beyond.

Better outdoor speakers deliver full-range stereo sound over a wide area, not just in one "sweet spot." Premium landscape speakers deliver long-range 360° coverage. Look for a warranty of at least five years for the dependability you need outdoors.

Installation options

Installation can be relatively quick if you're mounting speakers on your porch or deck. Landscape speakers require outdoor cable rated for underground use. Or, forget cable altogether and go with a wireless option.

One worthwhile accessory: a radio frequency remote control. It will keep you from running inside every time you feel like changing the musical mood.

This year, plan to get out more often, even if it's no farther than your own backyard. And let your favorite music greet you—from speakers that love to play outdoors, just like you.
